CEAD is a Cambridge based SME specialising in thermo-fluids, thermal management and green-tech (energy storage, harvesting and carbon capture technology) solution-finding and research & development. As well as offering consultancy, over the past four years we have developed a carbon capture technology that we are advancing towards a product offering. As a result we are now looking for a highly skilled, practical and enthusiastic Chemical & Process Engineer to join our team here in Cambridge.
The position involves continued development of state-of-the art porous polymer materials. The required candidate must demonstrate a broad understanding of chemical engineering, initially focussed on polymerisation and emulsion techniques, the role will broaden with time. The candidate is expected to rapidly assimilate knowledge from university academic partners, assess it, (if necessary propose advances in material performance and manufacturing)and implement the technology within a small team. Additionally the person must have the ability to see projects through from start to finish. Typical tasks include project conception, design specification of equipment, project planning, health & safety, risk analysis, procurement, equipment installation, plant start-up and debugging. The candidate will have documentation and writing skills to produce manufacturing procedures and maintenance schedules.
In addition to the high technical demands this position offers a practical/hands-on role, a great deal of responsibility and self-determination.
Provides chemical and process engineering support during knowledge transfer exercise from our academic partners and subcontractors to CEAD. Assess, design, develop and implement the acquired knowledge as well as add improvements in the building of a scale-up pilot test plant.
Validate scale-up pilot test plant products against the university laboratory benchmark samples, troubleshoot as required to achieve the quality required.
Initiate process improvements to ensure the pilot test plant can run at the design throughput level, maximising process yields and product purity and/or lower product and production costs.
Evaluate experimentation carried out by the partner university chemists to determine scaled up process modification(s) and efficiencies at pilot and plant scale application.
Work with CEAD project team designing plant and process equipment concepts that provide versatile operations capable of refining a wide range of feeds but still maintaining quality and processing efficiencies.
Understand the capability of designed and installed processes particularly with a focus on the scale-up and scale-down of processes within the equipment design and configuration.
Select appropriate process modelling tools and techniques.
Optimising production by analysing refining processes to determine bottlenecks and then reviewing engineering solutions to resolve them.
Undertake root cause analysis or other directed problem solving techniques.
Ensure good communications with the CEAD team, universities research teams, program managers and as necessary external contacts e.g. suppliers, new customers, etc.
Perform administrative functions such as reviewing and writing reports, approving expenditures and making decisions about the selection and purchase of materials or services
The suitable candidate will have:
Degree in Chemical Engineering based subject or equivalent experience.
3 - 4 years experience as Chemical/Process Engineer with excellent technical background.
Proven experience of problem solving.
Ability to analyse, report and take actions based upon the information received.
Ability to work under pressure and tight timescales.
Skilled and confident communicator who can clearly present ideas and solutions.
Chartered Engineer or working your way to be registered with a relevant professional body.
Postgraduate qualifications MEng /MSc /PhD, etc
Ability to translate technology knowhow into a business proposition or product.
Willingness to get involved in research and development of early concepts and the tenacity to see it through to conclusion.
Demonstrable ability to influence and persuade others to take appropriate actions.
